A Habitat Study I Edited Led to a Wildlife Bridge Near Me!

Back around 2022, I volunteered to copyedit a large habitat study of southwest Washington State. How large? 214 pages. It took the habitat data of five focal species — western grey squirrel, mountain beaver, beaver, fisher, and cougar — identified habitat patches where these critters had sufficient habitat, and identified potential links between the patches that, if connected, would allow these and related species to improve their survivability. // Towards the end of the writing process, the biologist assigned as one of the technical editors used up their funding and the remaining tech editor decided to make me a technical editor, too. // It got published online. I felt good about it, and went on to other volunteer environmental document editing. // And then in June of 2025, the Seattle Times reported that Conservation Northwest, one of the non-profits that contributed to the study, was going to build a wildlife bridge over Interstate 5 in southwest Washington! // I was (and am) elated.
